Embracing Change, While Changing Diapers

By the time my twins were two, I had easily changed over 10,000 diapers.  Diapers so tiny they looked like they belonged to a doll and larger versions with cartoon characters and stretchy sides.  With each change in diaper size came a new phase.  Just when I felt competent in this daily ritual, a newly mobile infant’s wiggles would force me to be more present.  And then there was that period of time when play was far more interesting than a clean diaper, and I was reminded to slow down and be patient.  Or the period when a testing toddler wanted to do it themselves which reminded me to laugh, because really sometimes there is nothing left to do.  And while I do think of myself as a diaper duty master now, the mechanics of changing a diaper is the least of what I learned.  Change is a constant in motherhood, and a new season is always right around the corner. When my kids began to show interest in potty training, one would assume that I was thri...

Traveling with Twins- Packing and Flying Hacks

The month of March always makes me think of Spring Break. Admittedly, a Spring Break vacation looks very different now that kids are in tow. And let’s be honest, describing travel with twins as a vacation may be a bit of a stretch. The idea of willingly sharing a small space with your two unpredictable babies and a hundred potentially cranky travelers probably sounds anxiety-inducing to you. And while I can’t guarantee that people will be clamoring to be your seatmate, I can promise that a successful trip, even with twins, is within your reach when you follow these simple travel tips.

Preparation

Start preparing for your trip at least a week in advance by making a list of everything you may need. Try dividing your list into sections like sleeping, feeding, bathing, clothes, etc. By starting early, you can add the items to your list that you use throughout the week so you can be sure not to forget anything important. It might also make sense for you to purchase and have bulky items like diapers shipped to your final destination so they will be waiting for you. Also, think about what you can borrow from friends and family to cut down on your baggage. Another consideration when planning your flight is what is the best time of day for your twins. You may want to travel in the morning when everyone is well rested, or during nap time if your twins are used to napping on the go.

Packing- Checked Baggage

A few days before your flight, start packing. Use your list to gather all the necessities and then sort into like piles. I use clear plastic bags to keep similar items together. Putting outfits in their own bags can make getting everyone ready while on vacation so much easier. You can also assemble bags based on function, like sunglasses, water shoes, hat, sunscreen, and bathing suit. That way you can grab your beach bag and everything is right there. Make sure you check each item off the list as it gets packed. And don’t forget to add those items you will be using up until the last minute like pacifiers and special toys.

Packing- Carry On

The secret to a pleasant flight is all about what you pack in your carry on.  For my family, that means snacks, snacks, and more snacks. I pack each snack in its own disposable container. This makes each snack special and lengthens the whole snacking process. Once empty, the little containers can be filled with small toys or even serve as a water cup. I also pack books, stickers, and a few small novel toys. Packing an extra set of clothes for each twin and an extra shirt for you can save you when an untimely accident occurs. You can opt to wear your babies through the airport to make security easier, or you can wheel your stroller right up to the gate and check it right before flight time.

During the Flight

You may be wondering if you should purchase your small child a seat, or have them on your lap. Of course, you will need to consider the duration of the flight, safety, and airline policies. But keep in mind, most airlines do not allow more than one lap child per row. If you do decide to purchase a seat for your child, you may be able to bring your car seat on the plane.  Some children prefer using their car seat on the plane as they are comfortable and used to it. Regardless of where your twins sit on the plane, it never hurts to wipe everything they may touch with an antibacterial wipe. This is especially important if you have preemies or are traveling during cold/flu season. During take off and landing make a bottle or pacifier available in case your child needs a little help clearing their ears.  Don’t forget to bring an empty plastic bag to corral all the trash that you will make during the flight.

Surviving a flight with your twins will make you feel like you can accomplish anything! Enjoying a trip with your twins requires just a little preparation.
